Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed tomography (CT) — an advanced method of visualization, which is gaining more and more importance in veterinary medicine. It allows you to obtain detailed cross-sectional images of the body and provides accurate diagnosis of diseases and injuries in animals.

CT is a type of X-ray examination. The basis of the method is the measurement of the absorption of X-ray radiation by the object. But unlike radiography, we are dealing not with a projection image of an object, but with a series of images of an object.

CT images, created by a computer, can be further processed and optimized. This allows for more accurate diagnosis, as you can adjust the brightness, contrast and sharpness of the images. In addition, images can be viewed in different planes (axial, sagittal, coronal) to provide comprehensive analysis. A three-dimensional image can be created from a series of slices.

CT gives much more information than radiography. CT images have a very high resolution and level of detail. This is especially important for the study of complex anatomical structures such as the brain, spine and internal organs. Thanks to CT, it is possible to understand the mutual location and relationships of objects. In addition, on the sections, you can see structures that are invisible on the radiograph due to the overlap of organs and tissues. By the way, in the practice of humane medicine, radiography is increasingly given the role of a screening study (routinely checking "if there are no abnormalities"), if one or another pathology is found on the radiograph, CT is performed.

Due to the fact that the patient must be motionless on the table during the study, CT studies of animals are carried out in a state of medicated sleep. This is a short-term condition, the examination of the patient (induction into medical sleep, laying, scanning) usually takes a few minutes. Moreover, the scan lasts less than a minute (for example, if you scan the thorax of a large dog with a slice thickness of 1.0 mm, then about 25-30 seconds).

CT gives quick results. Images are available immediately after capture, allowing rapid diagnosis and treatment.
CT can be used to examine different areas of the body. It is often used to diagnose pathologies in the head, chest cavity, abdominal cavity, spine, bones and joints, vessels.

CT is particularly useful for examining the head and brain. This makes it possible to diagnose tumors, bleeding, inflammation and other neurological diseases.

When examining the spine, CT helps to diagnose herniated intervertebral discs, fractures and degenerative diseases. Detailed images provide an accurate view of the vertebrae and intervertebral discs.

CT is ideal for examining the chest and abdomen. It can be used to diagnose heart disease, lung disease, tumors, abscesses, and other problems.

CT of vessels (angiography) is an expert method of diagnosing vascular pathologies

During the entire time of the study, the condition is monitored, the animal is observed by experienced doctors who, if necessary, will carry out the entire set of actions to stabilize the patient's condition.

The method and protocol of the study is determined by the diagnostician, taking into account the anamnesis, the results of the previous study, and the patient's condition at the time of the study.
