Hemodialysis for Dogs
Kidney failure in dogs is a serious problem that requires modern solutions to preserve the life and health of pets. At the "Genesis" veterinary hospital, we use intermittent hemodialysis, which allows us to effectively purify the blood in cases of acute or chronic kidney failure. This method acts as an "artificial kidney" and removes toxins from the body when the own kidneys are unable to cope with their function.
When is hemodialysis used?
Urgent hemodialysis is indicated for dogs in case of acute poisoning (drugs, alcohol), complications from babesiosis, as well as in cases of critical edema or electrolyte imbalance in the body. The procedure allows you to remove toxins and excess fluid, stabilize the work of the kidneys and liver, and restore the electrolyte balance.
Indications and criteria for the procedure:
Hemodialysis is performed for dogs weighing 10 kg or more, regardless of age or breed, in the presence of acute kidney failure or other specified conditions.
The process of preparing and conducting hemodialysis.
Before starting the procedure, our specialists conduct a detailed examination of your pet, including blood tests and ultrasound. For the procedure itself, a central catheter is installed in the jugular vein, which ensures high-quality and fast blood circulation. Sometimes the procedure is performed under "medical sleep" to ensure maximum comfort for the patient.
Duration and number of procedures.
The duration of one hemodialysis procedure is from 4 to 6 hours, and the number of sessions is determined individually depending on the condition of the animal. For example, in the case of poisoning, one treatment may be sufficient, while the treatment of acute kidney injury may require more than two sessions.
Behavior of patients during the procedure.
During manipulation, your pet lies on a soft, warm table, usually on one side or stomach. We create the most comfortable conditions to minimize stress and ensure a calm procedure.
Is it possible to be near the animal during hemodialysis?
Unfortunately, the presence of the owner during hemodialysis is not possible. The procedure requires constant monitoring of the equipment and the patient's condition. Our specialists are always nearby and provide constant control so that the animal feels safe.
